The Night Has a Thousand Eye
Francis William Bourdillon

The night has a thousand eyes,
and the day but one;
yet the light of the bright world dies
with the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
and the heart but one;
yet the light of a whole life dies
when love is done.

Reflection
When I first read this poem, I felt really sad. I can understand how the author wants to describe the love as beautiful thing. In this poem, the author compared first stanza and second stanza. He compared night with mind, day with heart, life with world, and dying sun with done love. He said light of whole life dies when love is done. From that, we can know that the main theme is that it is meaningless without love. But I don't understand what the eyes means. In fisrt stanza, the author used it for the stars, but in second stanza, I don't get it.

I think that his poem is a poem that is somewhat sad. It is because as I was reading the poem, I felt the loneliness inside the world.

Ignore Greg's sarcasm... this is a sad poem in many ways expressing the loss one feels when a love ends. What do you think the eyes are that are referred to in the first stanza? What would make sense in this situation? Actual eyes? Something else that shines in the night?
